When he called me a few days ago, Udo Gauss, after having said a few representational words, almost seamlessly convinced me of him as an insistent, suggestive, and steadfastly by his doing absolutely convinced of a man. To avoid misunderstanding: Everything was done without seizure or even surprise. In the speech he acted rather open, brutally honest, with the friendliness and charm of a person unobtrusively knnowing, that he is an expert. This proclaiming like a possessed, when his digital painting is up for debate, it quickly became clear: He loves his work passionately, can count on huge craft skills and confidence, is a conviction artist par excellence. Speaking of Craft: The living room ambience mocks clearly the norm for civil sense for coziness. I encountered a large-format high-end art printer, light table, and hardly controllable computer equipment with couch and TV corner - a bizarre-cozy rendezvous.
There is a vibe throughout our conversation underlining Udo's enthusiasm for having consistently gone a path, driven by the inner impulse of artistic creation after the travails of many design years .
Even before the visit a painting on the homepage gallery fascinated me with quiet grandeur, "Innocence." Emphasized form, simple shape. With irresistible melodical momentum. Titelstimmig and authentic down to the last detail line.
My excitement intensified when viewing the pictures in the apartment. Because of the limited places offered, strictly confined to the room walls the paintings hung unfolded, the conclusions drawn on canvas large format, any size restrictions defiant, self-confident of their charm. "Theater", wrapped in a blood-red curtain, whole generations of actors in its drapery concealing. Where eroticism climaxes is shown with gentle strokes and beyond voyeuristic effect "Passion", an image that continues "Innocence" as the second phase of life, the second picture of a triptych. And here is, completing the trio, an aries-like mythical beast with huge antlers and impressive shoulder / chest section as wayward "Conscience" conquering, its inevitable place.
